people are feeling the heat with a new poll showing thirty nine percent of people believe that the u.s. is in a permanent economic decline even goldman sachs announced it will layoff two hundred thirty employees all right now let's switch over to greece where just yesterday the parliament passed a plan to implement new austerity measures attention remains high on the streets over the last twenty four hours signs that frustration levels are growing demonstrators continue to take to the streets to voice their opposition to these austerity measures and to fight for some major changes to their government and again some of these policies that have drained the economy also today in the united kingdom more than half a million public sector workers are involved in a protest against government plans to change their pensions and freeze the pay for more on the turmoil in the u.k. i spoke to charlie veach the founder of the love police he gave me an insider's

perspective on what's happening on the streets of london take a listen. yeah i think there are big parallels between what's happening in greece and what's happening in britain of course protest of birth and to be a very british and civilized but there so we had less than fifty arrests and in greece we had running pitched battles in the streets and balms and tear gas and people getting injured but i think the public and europe are very confused particularly in britain how our country not only have we invaded iraq and afghanistan for natural resources but then we think we should be getting richer but then as you say very correctly the people who are responsible for the giant austerity measures being imposed upon us or are getting richer and richer at the disparity between the poor and the rich is actually growing and just want to get your take i mean what extent do you think this is a fact what's happening in greece and the us talk about how interconnected you think these crises. well one of the of control about so globalized

a way out of this is for people to start going to moving. away from governments and so i think up their own volunteer organizations are starting to be optimistic themselves charlie you said at the beginning of this interview that the protests that you cited today were very british very civilized and polite not a lot of arrests what's next i mean people continue to take to the streets this is something that does not seem to me at least to be changing. so as i know this was sort of a one day organized protest the will this continue. i'm i actually don't know the answer to that one you're absolutely right but it seems a big protest like we saw in greece yesterday it didn't change the student protest that. show up are increasing fees at the mine for hours and we saw that big marches against the iraq war in two thousand and three i think brits and i was i said is it the center of it like the men's or just world we're going to start to see but maybe civil disobedience and even nonpayment of taxes just the only way to actually

maintain our standard of living in a way i'm very optimistic about all these austerity measures because it will start to make people think that perhaps they don't need to get all these things from government perhaps we can do it for ourselves so i'm very optimistic about all that was charlie beach founder of the love police but earlier i spoke to gerald celente director of the trends institute i asked him about our current state of the global economy starting off here at home the news of math and layoffs on wall street specifically the financial giant goldman sachs here's what he had to say. i mean the goldman sachs gang oh yeah big crocodile tears and it's not only them it's many in the financial sector the economy continues to decline is no recovery in sight and it's hitting everyone and goldman sachs are taking a hit as more of that bailout money dries up in reality bites i want to talk about greece and london a protest taking place there on what do you think about this it seems that there's

a year now and yet you know the greek parliament was able to pass this new round of austerity measures these hats that you know are on a lot of average people who live there. to what extent do these protestors this anger actually fuel the end result. it's going to it's some point you know the politicians are nothing but if these are these are not democracies they call them representative democracies so politicians only represent for people that give the most amount of money so that people know that so that it's going to continue to be it's all go to war and the greek people know that if you don't stand up they're going to mow you down when you get really hungry you going to see the riots continue to escalate because what are these so-called osteria he measures what do they really bring how they bring a lot more poverty oh they bring a worse g d p o they bring more on employment so the politicians are doing nothing

more than the visiting for those that pay them all you know gerald back here in the u.s. and even right here in washington we've been watching just down the street from here this battle over the debt ceiling and now we learned the s. and p. has announced that if the u.s. can't pay it that the deadline of course on august second but if they can't have that the s. and p. would lower the top level aaa ranking to a deed now of course these meetings that have been taking place over the debt ceiling have been closed door meetings the nature of which have of course changed ever since those republican lawmakers opted out refusing to raise taxes on anyone but i'm wondering i mean we don't know much about what they've talked about but do you think that president obama has a plan no you guys no plan listen to his press conference shows that i reminded me of a high school kids reporters asking the principal questions and he's throwing out the same tired lawns he's been throwing out for the last two and

a half years he has no plan in place and here's what no one's talking about he talked about cutting the defense budget by four hundred billion dollars what over ten years what a billion dollars a year that's chump change it a defense budget that eating up when everything's included all. one point two trillion dollars and that was of course gerald celente director of the trans research institute. well the u.s. department of defense begins a new era today or does it this as defense secretary robert gates retires and passes the torch to former cia director leon panetta looking back at his career there have been several reports of gates' frustration especially when he first started coming into the pentagon being shocked at the machine he was dealing with seeing people you know who worked there were more interested in planning for a war rather than actually waging at the right equipment for soldiers on the front lines because just one example of what gates dealt with how this machine shaped the

war effort and to talk more about this earlier i spoke to stephen leatherman host of the progressive radio news hour and michael prysner an iraq war veteran and political activist i asked them about the legacy that gates is leaving behind and where the u.s. is now with all of these wars here's what they have the sack. before becoming secretary of defense robert gates served on many board of trustees and corporate boards for oil drilling companies for weapons manufacturers for defense contractors so robert gates' legacy is one of just another millionaire who came from the board rooms of big oil of the defense industry of wall street and who has sent now over two million young people are husbands wives families to fight wars that benefit only wall street and big oil robert gates legacy is one of thousands of dead u.s. soldiers tens of thousands of amputees an epidemic record suicides record military spending and of course complete destruction for iraq and afghanistan and really the

six total countries that are being bombed by the united states by the pentagon this second of robert gates wants to see for himself what his legacy is he should spend just one day with a grieving family in the united states in iraq or afghanistan or in pakistan who has lost a loved one in these wars for profit so stephen let me go t. you do you think that there was a change for gates as he went through this job over the years oh there really wasn't any change at all. to go on but he had a very you know to be so you know we want to you have. any position of power to you with them and they really had a little because what you have is completely is. how it was structured. if and when it comes to war and peace america has a permanent war agenda i wrote three major articles to try to hold america's

main operating base called small cities if you if you walk up with one and didn't know where you were you by think you were in the peoria. i mean literally that's the way they have all the mcdonald's and kentucky fried chicken around anyway as well to. expand event rack when we can build these bases believe them well use smaller ones in the air. or really satraps the ones we want to do are so impressed it's not reveal too well that it's not working out too well that iraqi people may have thought an idea that it's their country not us and they wanted and they want no part of us and they will keep fighting us because like interactive media we are going to are you going to major media reporting about. them bill you know the afghanistan or could they certainly don't report. michael i know you are

a veteran why do you think that means our feeling seeing the departure of robert gates is there hope that anything will change adding something he was a leaves washington he leaves his position very well respected by a lot of people certainly much more so than his predecessor but i'm wondering michael what you think that friends like yourself are thinking today. well veterans like myself people who have been sent to fight and die and lose limbs and to commit crimes against people that are not our enemies those who are in the military today i don't think we're at all honoring robert gates in service because you know he's never done a foot patrol in helmand province you never gone on a convoy in iraq but he's ordered lots of us to do it with great bloodshed as a result the reality is the war in afghanistan is not about al qaeda the war in iraq it's not about national defense or freeing the iraqi people these are wars for empire but they're not our empire it's not our empire it's the empire of big

business the empire of wall street the empire of big oil yet they send us people who couldn't afford to go to college people who need health care for our families people who don't have jobs they send us to do the fighting for them the reality is the majority of people in the united states are opposed to the wars in iraq and afghanistan inside the military as well and with this government is going to continue sending us to fight and die in these wars that are not in our interest and really it's up to us to stop them and that was stephen lineman host of the progressive radio news hour as well as iraq war veteran and political activist i call prysner. switching gears now really switching gears it is a sad day first and a happy day for others glenn beck wrapped up his last show on fox news today so what does that mean for fox and for back himself and also for the americans who have been tuning in for the last two years artie's honest report.
